Freelancing the World

The growth in the “gig” economy is booming because the structure of work today is so uneven. Jobs do not carry a guarantee that it will be there in five or ten years so people need to understand that they have to start doing something for themselves to ensure that they have a steady income in the future. The rise of apps that allow you to piecemeal a living wage is a blessing for many because they can now rely on different sources of income to make up for the lost hours from work.

More and more companies today are cutting hours because the costs are too high with many companies not having enough work for employees to do or, in the case of companies like Wal-Mart, restricting employees to only work a set number of hours and giving the rest to other employees to make up for the remaining hours, which takes away from someone working a full-hour work week and getting benefits. In order to handle such a living apps like Uber and Postmates are making it easier for people to gain a footing on their income by using their free time to pickup odd jobs for other people.

The start of the sharing Economy
The rise of this new market system started happening in the 70s when companies were encouraged to trim down their hiring practices but it wasn’t until the realization of what the internet could do that it started giving people more options for jobs. Ebay showed people that they could sell their own personal belongings to anyone in the world and turn that into a job. Amazon allowed people and companies to open up their own store online and sell directly through them enabling them to become the online store with everything. Then YouTube came along and turned visual content into a full time job and now that apps are around people are able to come up with new options of creating their own source of income in ways they never thought possible.

Ebay became the first online yard sale website to offer used items that people sold. The creative disruptors’ of the world saw this and knew the potential for what it was really worth. That is when you started seeing users who were making a lot of money off of Ebay because they were the first to embrace online purchasing with the use of paypal but they also saw that you could turn this into a full time job. The users who took advantage of what Ebay is all about, online marketing, became powersellers and would go out and find unique items to put up on their account to sell. Just think of the show, American Pickers, but with the hosts taking what they found and posting it up on Ebay to sell. In the case of Ebay you have a 1 seller to anyone ratio with the highest bid winning, just like at an auction but also the thrill of a game. If you listen to the song “Ebay” by Weird Al you can begin to see the crazy appeal that some people get out of using it.

Amazon started as this new website that allowed you to purchased stuff from a store online that you couldn’t actually visit to touch any of the products. The hard part about getting people to sign up and use it was getting people comfortable enough to use their credit card online. The appeal for businesses and entrepreneurs came when Amazon allowed them to set up their own store online because at the time, who knew how to build websites? There were no website building sites like there are today to make it easy so if anyone could post products and sell through Amazon, which they handled all the payments and processing, why not take advantage of that? Many people did because they could offer the best deals found online and still to this day Amazon offers some of the best deals online. The reason for this is because so many companies are signed up on Amazon just incase Amazon itself cannot offer the better deal they might have another company that does. Amazon now makes it very easy to self-publish your own books which many people have taken advantage of with some people publishing hundreds of books on their own that would have never gotten approved from formal book publishing companies.

YouTube then came in and showed people that you could post content online and make money doing that, entertaining people. Many people today make a nice living on making content that people enjoy watching which has really created this new economy of finding and creating your own kind of work which is exactly what the apps like Uber and Airbnb and even TaskRabbit now offer.

Apps for different skills
Once companies started using the internet more to outsource jobs that is when American’s realized they had to start finding new lines of work. Many people today rely solely on these apps to make up for their income. The required skill of time management is so key to balancing all these apps that you have to check them on a regular basis (meaning every 2 minutes) or risk losing a job to another person.

The reason companies went the route of outsourcing was because it allowed them to focus on what they do best instead of managing payroll and taxes and health benefits. The use of full time employees for that is a drag on helping the company stay lean and nimble in hard times. The use of contract employees for small projects is something more companies favor because it means no dealing with benefits of perks.

The growth in apps will only continue which means the more apps you find that connect people with other people for work, the faster the adoption of the app. People like apps that make it super easy to sign up and start making money. If you can make repairs around the house at a moment’s notice then apps like TaskRabbit and Thumbtack make it very easy to post a job and get a reply within a few minutes from people who are qualified.

The rise in personal projects such as errands, grocery shopping, and little household jobs are where Favor, Postmates, Fancyhands, JobRunners, Airtasker, Agent Anything, and Needto all come in and provide options for people to find work. People who are a jack of all trades would find websites like these a heaven sent option because it means they can look for quick jobs that last from a few minutes to a few short hours. I will provide a list below of all new companies that are joining in to provide these kind of services of connecting people with job takers.

The interesting thing to note is that many people who do use apps like Uber and Airbnb and TaskRabbit majority of them have college degrees and use their extra time to make a little extra money.

The Future of the Workplace
It is not surprising to learn that many companies are using these apps and websites to find short-term employees to fill in their labor needs. You might be wondering, “why not just hire those people then?” Well most jobs are not long term and many do not even fit a part-time requirement. Wonolo is a company that was created out of the Coca-Cola Founders platform, which helps entrepreneurs launch their startup ideas and started by AJ Brustein and Yong Kim.

The purpose of this two-year old company is to help companies find employees on short notice that are pre-screened and qualified for the work. Many of these jobs operate inside the companies they are hiring for so, for instance, they might need helping with packaging or shipping items or even delivering to customers. The range of work they have listed covers a broad range of jobs, some that require a college degree and experience and others that you are available and pre-screened.

The future of the workforce is such that it is cheaper to hire people this way for short-term projects then to keep people on full-time or part-time. How many times have you gone to work and seen people just fluttering around because they don’t have much work to do. The company could have spent that money on something better. That is why companies do not hire for long-term anymore and they are cutting and reducing jobs at a fast rate because it makes no sense to keep on a full staff of employees for jobs that only need work when the time comes.

The nice thing about sites like Wonolo, Amazon Home Services, and TaskRabbit is that they enable anyone, regardless of age, to be able to work and make a living doing what they are good at. There are some people who are great handy men but what company is hiring for that?  Now they can sign up with all these different services and start finding work right away. Wonolo has mentioned that their services help people promote themselves in jobs that would have been hard to get otherwise but that they do have a number of people who have secured full-time work using their service.

The Best way to Learn is to Watch Someone

The rise in live streaming is adding new life to areas of work that people would normally consider boring to watch. The adage that watching people play video games would never be a thing because, “who would want to watch someone play video games when you can do it yourself,” is now completely false. This is a myth that has long been put to bed. People today watch gamers online 24/7 and just like talent scouts look online for the next internet superstar, there are gaming companies that are watching live streams of gamers in order to find the next big gamer to come and compete at their next big tournament.

The rise of coding with the project of Hour of Code has created some new business ventures that are capitalizing on bringing two areas of interest together, live streaming and coding. This new industry is posed to create a whole new way of learning how to code and what better way to learn than to watch someone code. Twitch currently is the model in which most live streaming services look towards to understand how the live streaming community works but also how the business model works. Although live streaming on phones is still popular, screen capture still provides more for viewers to take in. Phone streaming only provides in-the-moment situations, whereas, screen capture allows more actions to be taken that can be planned ahead before starting.

But Isn’t Coding Boring?
This is a concern that many people have who are coders and have been doing it for years. The idea here is that if you have been coding as a professional you are completely aware that it can get boring and tedious very quickly after awhile but for someone who is just learning they can watch how all the pieces fit together. This right there is the appeal to this new market.

The first time you learn about something it is all very interesting and new so everything you see is something to learn about. The same thing is happening when you watch people live stream what they are good at. This is the reason Twitch and gaming are so popular because gamers who are just starting or want to be better at a game can watch and learn how some of the best players play. The same goes for coding. Infact, Twitch does offer a category where you can watch programmers code and go back and look at all their videos. The category they created is for game developers. Many coders have even built up an audience by doing this just like gamers and youtubers have.

The great part about watching coders code is that you also learn about what websites they are using in order to figure out how to code better or where they pull lines of code from. There are many websites that coders use as databases or libraries so they don’t have to keep memorizing lines of code all the time and that is also the appeal to why this new industry is seeing an up rise in users. The author of this blog has already created their own account in order to better learn how to program.

Challenges of Gaining Coders
The hard part about this that many people might be concerned that you are giving away something secret or special that you don’t want anyone to know about. This is a strong case where you might be building an app or program that you don’t want anyone finding out about. There are plenty of coders out there who do code for fun but now it is a matter of finding ones willing to live stream the projects they are working on for the public. This is part of the reason it is hard to get quality programmers to contribute to the site.

Developers, programmers, coders (they are all the same) are paid very well for their time and for many when they are not coding they enjoy relaxing doing other things. There are coders who enjoy being at their computer all the time but getting them to share online can also be a  challenge so the first websites are looking to find incentives. YouTube already provides the option of allowing users to turn their channel into a paid channel but those videos are not live streamed so you can not give instant feedback or ask questions as you are watching. YouTube does provide the option for streaming so that is another option to use since YouTube is more well known in the world. YouTube also just announced that they released an app, YouTube Gaming, that lets gamers stream their gaming content with a focus on live streaming. You can watch on your computer as well but this just demonstrates the growing demand for live streaming services.

Where to Watch
The two websites to bookmark and sign up for are LiveCoding.tv and WatchPeopleCode.com. Here you will know that the audience that is watching you is dedicated to learning how to code in order to improve their skills. Users are able to ask questions and, depending on the channel, get full explanations on why they set up their code in a certain way. There are some channels where all you are watching is a live stream of people working with music playing the whole time. This is done for more advanced users who are interested in learning how to do things a little faster.

LiveCoding.TV provides a live stream on their front page of the website in order for first-time viewers to understand how they can benefit from such a website. In many cases there is a capture screen of the code itself and the programmer in the corner talking about what they are doing. Livecoding lets you set the parameters of your profile after you sign up in order to find exactly what it is you are looking for. You are able to say whether you plan to watch or stream and create your username. Whether or not you plan to ever stream is up to the user but you have the option at any time just by clicking on your username after signing up.

After you have created your account you can then filter their large database of videos to find the ones you are looking for. For example if you are a beginner learning HTML then you change your difficulty to beginner and then select from the category list HTML. On the side bar you can even find the top channels for the language you want to learn from. This helps you narrow down your search by finding the videos with the most views.

WatchPeopleCode.com allows people to sign up with their Reddit account and find the videos they are looking for. Their categories are not as extensive as Livecoding but they encourage anyone to post anything to do with live coding. The site is connected to Reddit subcategory  /r/WatchPeopleCode.

Benefits to Live Streaming Code
The benefits are huge when you think about how many people are watching your live stream or going back and seeing how you created some of your past projects. Some of the coders who stream their work say they prefer Livecoding over Twitch because they know that all the people watching on Livecoding are there to learn how to improve their coding skills, whereas, Twitch’s community is made up of mostly gamers so you get a lot of people trolling on coding streams just to get attention. This means you can create more meaningful conversations about people who really want to learn on Livecoding.

The other benefit to all the live streamed videos is that you build a library of all your work for companies to see. Right now the landscape is fairly new so making a name for yourself is easy in a new field but as more and more coders sign up the quality of the session will have to improve if they want to grab the attention of a company like Google or Facebook. This means that coders will need to have better communication skills as they are streaming their videos and answering questions. I have always said that you have no idea who is checking our your online content and you might one-day get that person who can change your life so the better quality you produce the better your chances are of getting someone’s attention for a high paying job.

Kids and teens who use a site like this to teach others how to program can put this on their college application to show how they helped people learn how to code better. Young digital natives are able to pick up on the nuances better and faster so if they can create streaming sessions for community members then they will be able to demonstrate to colleges and future employers that they have the technical and communication skills to do their job. The ability to translate and teach online is a skill that is also growing in demand because it demonstrates that you know how to set everything up, structure your sessions, and communicate clearly.

Coders who create a name for themselves on these kind of websites are in a prime position to be able to offer their services one-on-one. One of the challenges that websites like these must face is monetizing their services. One option the founders, Jamie Green and Michael Garbade, had was to let users pay for 1-on-1 sessions with their favorite streamer and for streamers to offer more advanced sessions for private groups. The founders even talked about letting streamers provide help with school homework at any level. For coders looking to make a little extra cash on the side and build a name for themselves this a great opportunity to sign up for now.

The world of watching coders code live is a new one so it will be interesting to see where these websites end up in a year from now. They could possible be the next big thing to happen for Hour of Code because as it turns out not every school that says they are for coding is actually keeping their word about it. Infact, in a survey conducted by Gallup they found that most schools don’t feel that parents and students are interested in learning to code. Infact the conflicting problem is that most schools don’t feel the need to prioritize computer science because of standardized testing.

The Creation of Extremely Successful People, or “How to be like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk”

Magazines like Success, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, and Inc. are great and fun to read because they are very informative about what it takes to build a successful business and the only way to do that is by reading about how successful people got there. Everyone enjoys a good rags-to-riches kind of story because it just goes to show that with a little hard work anyone can strike it rich. The reality to that line of reasoning is that it is just not true. Your upbringing, habits, and values you were taught have everything to do with how you approach the world and deal with set backs. In a recent article, Elon Musk’s ex-wife, Justine Musk, talked about what it was like to live with Elon during his start up days when he was just starting out building his billion dollar companies we know him for today. The article is very insightful but there is so much to take apart from reading it because many will walk away thinking that hard-work is all they need to do to be successful and rich like him. That is the wrong message to pick up on yet so many fall for it. This article will explain to you why the Steve Jobs, and the Bills Gates, and the Richard Bransons’ of the world are super rich and why money was never their original goal and why people like that are so different from everyone else and why it all matters.

Creating a Fertile Upbringing
There is a lot to say about the upbringing of successful people. Many of the them dealt with hardships that made them realize how much harder they had to work to become successful while many others had the options provided to them but the setbacks told them they weren’t trying hard enough. Howard Hughes was one such child who took many of his ideas and turned them into a reality. In the Houston area he was one of the first kids to ever invent a motorized bicycle. His sheer curiosity led him to taking apart a steam engine that his father had and using the parts to build the motor on the bike. He was the talk of the town and got his picture taken in the local paper, which was considered a very big deal back then.

Howard Hughes was a dreamer and a doer, anything he set his mind to he was able to create it for himself. The money his family had, after his father invented a drill bit that would forever change how drilling was done, enabled Howard to go on and create a vast fortune, the likes of which had never been seen before. Howard was never restricted in his pursuits and interests. Anytime he was interested in something he would find as many books as he could find on the subject and read until he knew everything he could on the subject. This intense drive would later lead him to having his first flying lessons at age 14 and later taking random engineering and math courses at Caltech. This was the same habit that Steve Jobs would later do at Stanford, except Jobs didn’t limit himself to just those areas of study but opened himself to everything Stanford had to offer, which he took full advantage of.

Children need an upbringing that exposes them to different ideas and ways of living in order to see how this world actually works. This gives their mind ideas and then their mind comes back with solutions to some of those problems and fills in the gaps. The doers go out and start finding ways to make it all happen. The dreamers continue talking about the problem and wait for an excuse to not do it because someone else already is.

The worst action a parent can take for their child is to keep them so busy with pointless activities that the child is too tired to ever stop for a minute to understand why they are having to do all the stuff their parents are making them do. These are the kids that miss out on things that other kids get to do but they don’t. These kids grow up believing that they are supposed to be attending sports practice and games every weekend and taking school classes to improve their grades while other kids get to be apart of programs that they are purely interested in doing out of sheer curiosity. Which child will have a better outlook on life in the end? The child with the parents who lets the child decide what they want to do with their time and what programs they get to join, that’s who. Do understand though that not every child has an inner drive and, so again, that is where the Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of the world differ from everyone else. Steve and Bill had intense passion in them to learn and do things that interested them so they didn’t need parents to keep them busy because they were already doing that on their own.

Richard Branson is dyslexic and did poorly in school growing up. Today he probably would have been medicated and placed into remedial programs because he was always causing a fuss in the classrooms and instead of the teachers knowing how to deal with him properly, the school would have made the parents medicate him in order to control him. The future of Virgin empire would not exist today if that had happened because people who don’t have larger-than-life personalities don’t amount to much in life.  Mr. Branson is a larger than life person because of the extreme activities he has taken to get his business known to people. Most people play it safe in life because it gets them from point A to point B very easily. People like Gates, Branson, Musk, and Zuckerberg risk a lot just for a small gain of control but it is that control that sets them apart from everyone else. Branson is known for his media attention stunts, most of what most people would never do because the risk is too high but people like Branson don’t see it as that, they see it as living life to its fullest and enjoying what comes with it, even if it’s nothing.

Michael Jackson grew up with a very hard father who made his sons practice everyday until they got each song correct. Michael was 5 years old when he was already performing as the lead singer for the Jackson 5 band. How many 5 year olds do you know who can sing, dance, and perform for people professionally? Very few but they are out there. So why did Michael rise to heights that no one else on earth has ever achieved before while so many still struggle to get there now that the internet has made it easier to achieve attention and fame? Michael’s father instilled in him the lessons of hard tedious work habits. His father made him practice when he got home from school until it was time for bed. Then he had his boys perform at any nightclub or bar that would let them perform to start improving their stage presence. It wasn’t too long before the boys got so good that everyone was in sync and no mistakes were made because if there was the boys would get a beating from their dad. (Aside note: no form of abuse should go that far with instilling valid discipline skills in someone). In many interviews Michael talked about how hard their dad made them work and that is why he would spend hours in the studios working on songs and practicing his dance moves. Everyone who has ever worked with Michael will tell you that he was a very hard worker and he wouldn’t stop working until everything was perfect.

Bill Gate’s childhood is interesting because when he was first introduced to computers he had all the time in the world to learn everything about them because he was still just a kid. He didn’t have the responsibilities that pull adults away from learning things to improve their lives so he was able to put in a large amount of time before he ever stepped foot on Harvard campus, enough to make him an expert. By the time he got to college he had already created several programs, which he created by studying how lines of code work, all on his own. The freedom he had growing up and the intense push by his parents to always win and excel at sometime gave him the inner fire he needed to become a fierce business man later on.

Larger-than-Life Personalities
Michael Jackson and Howard Hughes are perfect examples of people with larger-than-life personalities. People like that can walk into a room and everyone looks at them because of the sheer intensity of their personality. Their personalities act as a magnet, attracting everyone around them to come and talk to them because they act so fascinating. Their lifestyles were so out of this world that it made them seem more than human. Michael Jackson created the allure of what it meant to be rich and famous when he purchased Neverland Ranch in the 1980s. No one had ever done such a thing so he created this whole sense of being above everyone else just by how he lived and even by how he dressed. He never wore simple things, they were always clothes with style and color to them that only someone of royalty would wear.

Moguls are people who have created their whole empire around who they are by what they do in their life. These are people who can walk in a room and seem totally crazy and insane to everyone they meet and talk to but the reality though is that they know exactly how to make what they say happen. This is what sets them apart from so many people – how they execute their plan. That they are able to follow through on their word, regardless of the risks, and make all of it come true. Of course there are those that failed but they took those failures and made something out of them. They turned them into valuable lessons that few ever stop to consider. Most regular everyday people will stop when someone tells them to because they are afraid of breaking the rules or getting on someone’s bad side. A mogul will not take no for an answer but instead will ask questions and find the loopholes to what it is they want to accomplish and if they do not get the answer they want to hear then they try another way or talk to someone else that can help them.

In the movie, “Revenge of the Electric Car,” Elon Musk took full responsibility for all the problems Tesla had in the beginning. They were not able to make their delivery date and so the first group of people were very mad because not only were they not able to get the car they order on time but they were also being asked to pay more because of Tesla’s mistakes. In order to handle this problem personally, Elon Musk sat down and talked with these people and answered all their questions about what went wrong. He made it a point to be there in front of them and show them that he cared very much about what he was doing and that he wanted to make sure they heard from him personally about the struggles and you know what? Everyone listened and empathized with what he had to say but not only that but also what he was going through. His company was burning through cash at a fast pace and no one knew what would happen after these car buyers got the cars they ordered.

The very fact though of being present in front of them was enough for them to realize that he really did care about his company. He knew he couldn’t just send them an email and be done with it because they might be the make-or-break point that his company needed to get off the ground. Of course, today Tesla car company is ahead of so many others in creating luxury electric cars. The fact that he spent many nights not knowing if his company would live to see another day is what separates people like Musk from everyone else. They have the tenacity and vision and strength to push through and talk to people. It is their inner drive and people skills that sets them apart. Majority of people would have tanked under all that pressure Elon had in the beginning days.

Handle Stress like No Other
Stress is an everyday part of our lives and it comes in various forms but it also depends on the lifestyle you live that will determine how much stress you bring into your life. Some people bring stress onto themselves just by how they think and others can keep stress at bay because they are very efficient in handling their tasks. How you handle stress though is a trait of your overall personality. People who are very successful never let stress get in the way of what it is they are doing. They don’t make excuses for it and they never let repetitive tasks stop them. They push ahead to create something so they can see that progress is being made. They pace late at night thinking about how to execute everything correctly. They manage the stress by keeping themselves focused on what they need to do instead of letting it overwhelm them. It was common to hear from friends of Michael Jackson say that he would call them late at night, usually around 3 or 4 in the morning because he had an idea that he wanted to share and go over with, so people with intense personalities are always working and thinking about how to make something better.

People like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are always flying all over the world to speak at events, attend meetings, talk at conferences, and lots more. This requires a lot of traveling, a lot of time away from their family and partner, but most importantly it puts a lot of mental and physical stress on their body. People like this are told they have to stay inshape in order for their body to handle what they do all the time. When Bill Gates discovered the lectures, “Big History,” which is a program created by the Teaching Company, “Great Courses” series, he was actually working out in his private gym he has in his home. He makes it a point to watch lectures while he works out for an hour, why? Because he understands that he needs to keep his body in shape for all the work he does everyday. He also watches these lectures because he knows how important it is to always be learning. Now that he discovered that history program he is working to make that a part of the regular curriculum children learn in school.

Moguls are Self-Educators
This is also another key characteristic that sets moguls apart from everyone else. They see learning and reading as an integral part of their life that they make it a point to read and study everyday. They view the public library as one of the most important contributions to human life. Most richer than rich people are self-educated and for very good reasons. They knew exactly what it is they wanted to learn about the world in order to make what they wanted happen. They didn’t need a piece of paper in high school or college to motivate them to learn and study, it was their personal projects they were working on that made them want to learn. A degree in college was nothing to them if it meant getting in the way of their learning.

The famous phrase from Mark Twain is one that many moguls live by, whether they know it or not, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Do you think Facebook would be around if Mark Zuckerberg did as he was supposed to and attend classes and study and do homework? No, that would have taken time away from him working on building Facebook. He was so focused on building his product that everything else started to just fall away.

The same for Gates, he was too busy working on creating Microsoft to worry about attending lectures and doing homework that he just dropped out and went on to become the richest man in the world. This was only because he knew what kind of education he wanted and needed to do the things he wanted to in life. Growing up he spent many hours in the public library reading and would even give himself goals of reading a lot of books during the summers.

The public library to many of these greats is that you can get an entire education for free just by going in and sitting down and reading. There is no cost to just grabbing a book that interests you and learning everything you want on the subject and that is how they these greats lived their lives. They would spend hours upon hours reading up on subjects that fascinated them until they were the experts on the subject. It was their fierce drive and personal interest that taught them the importance of learning. They didn’t need a bachelor’s degree or masters degree to tell them they needed to study and work hard on something, they already had the self-motivation to do it on their own; all for the price of nothing but time. To moguls, time is a very precious resource and they know that reading is perhaps the most important task, aside from working on their ideas, they should be doing anytime they get the chance. When someone like Branson or Musk read, the read, not because they are told they need too but because they are very interested in the subject matter and that is why everything they read is interesting and not boring.

Here’s a joke – what place has more wealth than a bank and never gets robbed? A library.

Obsession and Personality
You will get no where if you do not have something that drives you everyday. Thing that drives you has to be so big that it pushes you to get other people involved and that obsession carries over by how you are able to convince people of why they should be involved as well. Steve Jobs spoke with conviction because he believed that everything he was working on was super important so it made people listen to him. There are a number of books on him now that explain how to talk and present like Steve Jobs.

Your obsession must be so intense that it pushes out the mundane in your life and gets you to focus on what you need to work on. Infact, this obsession will sometimes cause you to forget to eat, sleep, and tend to the tasks you need to be doing that are just apart of life, like showering and maintaining a regular sleep schedule. This is hard for people who have projects so large in their life that they know that for every minute spent doing something else their project falls behind. The reason why people like this create such a high level of obsession is because they are so fascinated by the work they are doing that they don’t want to stop.

Right now there are thousands of teams coming together to create apps and companies so they can capitalize on a problem in the market. The only problem with many of these thousands of apps is that they will only solve a small problem and only for a sort period of time because the life of an app now is very short lived. Only a small group of apps get to live longer than 5 years before a new one comes in to replace it. Remember teens are very finicky about what is on their phones and they are the ones to help bring about trends. People like Gates, Jobs, and Musk are all working on problems that are much larger in scope. They work to fix major problems in the world so that millions, if not billions, are improved by the work that they do. One has to have an intense and obsessive personality in order to handle all that pressure from people who want to speak with you all the time.

The personalities of people like this are extreme. They are autistic, dyslexic, have ADD, or that one kid who just didn’t fit in with everyone else. If they are not medicated but encouraged they will go on to do great things with their time and life. Intense personalities are not sedated they are allowed to flourish. The people around them might get annoyed but that is their problem because the people they will attract later on will be the ones to help them with their ideas. Steve Jobs became Steve Jobs because he didn’t fit into any mold that society had for him, he probably made a lot of people mad and annoyed a lot more. This is what people like the greats do, they piss people off because not everyone can handle their intense passion and creativity all the time so they are prone to have fewer friends but more people interested in working with them. They are not concerned if they annoy anyone because they don’t expect everyone to understand what it is they are trying to do until they can prove what it is afterwards. Then, and only then, do people finally come to see what geniuses they really are.

Time is Worth more than Money to them
The great minds of people are careful how they spend their time because they realize that time is money and how they spend it will determine if they gain anything from it in the end. If they don’t then they know it was not time well spent. This is how they view it, even in the beginning days before they are rich and famous. Remember money for them is never the goal. They look at projects, books, websites, as something they can take away that will help them later on. You will never see people like this playing apps that will take their time away but instead talking with people that will only further their cause or reading books that might give them insight as to how to look at a problem.

Justine goes on to say that the greats of today studied the greats of the past and this is very true because history has taught us that we are creates of habit and history repeats itself because of that very habit. The tools we use today are different from back then but our relationships to one another have not changed and how we use those relationships is to anyone’s advantage who knows what to study from people of power a lot time ago. Biographies tend to be popular books because they provide insight to their life and times of long ago.

If you want to be like one of the greats start looking at how you spend your days. Do you have your schedule laid out before you, do you have projects that you complete when you say you will or do they always get pushed back? You have to look at how your life is spent because people of influence and power are always in control of their life and schedule which is what amounts to success. If you make excuses to get out of  events you are supposed to be at then what does that say about how you prioritize your life and time?

The world caught notice of her great response to the question, “How can I be as great as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Richard Branson?,” and what made it even better was that she commented on whether or not Elon Muck contacted her after she wrote that and she said that he did, only to say, “Well said.” The lessons she has learned, from living with a man who is doing so much in this world, will forever change how she approaches life, work, and sets goals. For one who still thinks it is about only hard work, you now know that what you read and spend your off time doing is just as important as the work you put out. Also the people you surround yourself with and what they do with their time is just as important as when you consider what to watch or read. If you read amazing content your goals and work habits will start to reflect that. If your friends are successful then you know that success breeds success. For anyone that wishes to achieve such heights it is a very lonely journey to the top with very few friends waiting for you at the end.

If that is your goal then good luck and keep a healthy lifestyle because you will need it.

16 Wildly Successful People Who Overcame Huge Obstacles To Get There

Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset

It is easy now-a-days to think that you have the next best idea waiting to happen. You discovered it one day when you were at a family get together and all the kids kept complaining that they didn’t have an easy way to fill up their water balloons and that it took too much time. You figured out a way to build a spout that can fill up hundreds of balloons all at the same time.

In coming up with this product you figured that the time it took to make your device was pretty simple and easy and you kept hearing from people all around you that you have a million dollar idea on your hand. You begin to reason that “yea, I do have a million dollar idea on my hand but how I do I turn it into a business?”

Glamorizing the World of Startups
The show, Shark Tank on ABC, has grown in popularity because of the ability of the producers to take what is normally a boring presentation process and turn it into something entertaining to watch. If a startup company needed an investment then they had to apply to many Venture Capital Firms hoping that a few call them back to come in and pitch their idea, which was way before the show Shark Tank.

People love watching the show because a lot of them sit at home saying to themselves, “oh I had that idea a long time ago, mine was better.” Others might say, “No, I wouldn’t invest in your company, you have no idea what you are doing!” These are common things all across the board when watching the show until you come across an idea that already been done before but in a new way. Those are the companies, with a healthy growth rate, that catch the eye of the sharks in the room. Of course many of those sharks are not all that interested in your company in the but trying to gain as much control of your company as possible in order to increase the wealth potential of their own portfolio.

So what are those Sharks thinking about when they look at other people’s ideas? Why do they act so ruthless and not care that they might offer them a lowball offer for a high equity share when it means a not-so-positive fate for the CEO pitching to them? Why? They want the product and idea and the CEO pitching has done the homework of showing them how the market is reacting to their idea. If it is positive, then with the amount of money each shark has, they can easily turn it around and make millions more off of it but first they need to own it outright or have controlling power.

In order to see why certain entrepreneurs go on to make it and why others keeping to spin in circles I will show three habits that are shown to have huge positive effect on growing your business but also help improve your work habits.

Step 1. Developing Habits
Successful entrepreneurs are different from people who call themselves entrepreneurs because they don’t really do anything except keep busy with busy pointless work. Successful entrepreneurs have developed habits that keep them out there learning about what all is happening.

One of the first things that naturally successful people do is develop a complete picture of what they want their life to be in their head. They are usually the ones to get up early and perform some habit before breakfast. The most common are writing, working out, responding back to emails, preparing a To-Do list that is achievable throughout the day, or working on a project one step at a time. People like this keep their schedule well planned out but allow flexibility.

Many CEOs and many articles have been written about what they like to do early in the morning. It is a most common trait to hear that many of them get up at 5 or 6 in the morning to start their routine. Many of them don’t pour that first cup of coffee until an hour or two later. This is enough time to get your mind and body into the habit of getting work accomplished throughout the day. People who start their day with no purpose or direction tend to putter around in the mornings going from one little thing to the next before they sit down and ask themselves, ok, what should I do today?

An entrepreneur should have their days planned out according to their week and month. For example, they know that they need to work on their website but they know that they cannot spend all their time doing that so they devote a certain portion of an hour each morning until they have to launch, or if it is already up and running, then working that hour to make sure it looks updated for people to see that the website is new and refreshed each time. This habit of updating also matches with making sure the website is growing over time. A website that looks the same from seven months ago is not a company that shows any growth or promise.

The work you do today should match what you plan to accomplish tomorrow and the work you accomplish this week should enable you to finish the work you plan to do next week. Everything is built on layers and successful entrepreneurs have a clear understanding of this but also of their time and schedule. Events that pop up are not a challenge because successful entrepreneurs understand that there are events that they just need to be at. Schedules help keep things in order but Life is what you plan around so thinking that you can just ignore certain events is not the habit of successful people in general.

Creating a habit is difficult because it means having to change what you have been comfortable doing before. Many times it just requires doing it cold turkey and not looking back. There are many, many books out there about how to change habits, many are amazing books to read like this one, but the difference between reading and doing is the act of prolonging. A book gives you the feeling of accomplishing something in small steps just to convince yourself that you are doing something but many times after the book is over you fall back into the same rut. Change is not easy but doing great things was never the intention.

Step 2. Focus on Goals with Accomplishments in the End
This is a very common thing that people have trouble dealing with. You start a project with intense focus only to get distracted by something else and you get sidetracked. You set aside the project and leave it until you have more time again to work on it. Or as you are working on your project you run into a problem that prevents you from completing your work. The obstacle in the way, for many people, keeps them from completing their work so they lose interest and start another project thinking that a fresh start is all they need. This is a common bad habit because after years have past you look back at all the unfinished projects.

Each time you start something new without finishing those old projects you create the bad habit of “doing things that are easy” but also the creating the mindset, “if I don’t like it then why should I force myself to work on it if I’m not enjoying it?” Both are big problems that keep people from doing great things but none is more so than the last one. When you reason to yourself that it is ok to only work on things that make you happy you teach yourself to be selfish in your personal habits of work. Not all work is meant to be fun and accomplishing great things takes large amounts of time to be great at them but a huge proportion of that time is meant to be difficult and strenuous. Only great people become great by doing hard things.

The most common activity all books on creating positive habits tell you is to start with small activities that can be finished right away. This helps build the habit of learning to finish things you started. When I meet people one of the things I pay attention to is listening to how they speak about what they work on. People who sprinkle excuses in everything they say tells me that they are not interested in getting real work done because “they don’t have the time.” They just want to look busy but the reality is you will never have enough time.

The habit of maintaining your schedule concise and clearly enables you to see how to finish the projects you start. You should be able to look at their schedule and see when each part will be finished so by a future date set you will be able to move on to the next phase. Take for example someone who plans on writing a book. Someone that is serious will not let anything get in the way of their schedule so they set a time that is least likely to have any other major event push it out of the way, hence why so many successful people like writing early in the morning. They might give themselves a goal of an hours worth of time or 2000 words a day until they hit 300 pages.

A project with a goal like that is easy to follow because it has a defined limited with a daily goal set so all that needs doing is the work. You will be ale to know when you will finish the book by knowing how many words fit on each page. Understand that if writing books is your work then creating a schedule is helpful but creating a workflow is more important. This is why many writers look for little get-away locations that offer inspiration and solitude on the weekends in order to accomplish more without anything getting in the way. The importance behind all this is making sure the thing you set out to do is finished because there will always be a next phase that follows. Just because you finished the book doesn’t mean it stops there, now you need to get a cover done, get it edited, and then submit it to publishing houses. knowing there will always be a next phase scares many people because it means the work never stops and why should it? People will always want more if they like it.

Step 3. Being Proactive about Opportunities
This is a mindset that is very hard for a lot of people to follow just because it means having to put yourself out there more. How many times have you met an entrepreneur who is working on their project and you tell them about something that they should attend that will help with what they are doing only to find out that they never went. Then you find out that they are simply working on their project because they enjoy it but their actions do not show they actually want any growth for what they are doing. Actions will always speak louder than words so instead of asking someone if they want to grow their business it is better to ask them how they spend their time. That is a huge indication of what their actions are saying. An entrepreneur that is just starting out by meeting people will be more successful with their projects than someone who stays home and keeps to themselves but pours a lot of money into online advertising. Which one will be more successful in the end? The one that gets out and meets people because they might meet someone that connects them with someone who can help grow their business.

The internet has enable many people to just sit behind a screen and never talk to anyone but it gives the wrong impression that that is all they need to do in order to grow their business. In the book, The Promise of a Pencil, author Adam Braun talks about how he used his friends and their friends to help throw him fundraising parties for his organization. In was through his proactive nature to get out there and connect with people to find out who would be interested in what he was doing, which was building schools in poor regions of the world that didn’t have access to education. Starting an idea like that takes larges amounts of people to help because sitting behind his computer and just running a website wasn’t going to do it. He was always attending events, talking to people, and trying to find the next person who could help and he did.

An entrepreneur who is inflexible about his schedule will miss out on a lot in life. I could easily say that I have enough on my plate to work with but there will always be new events popping up that I need to be at and if I miss them I miss what opportunities were present If I had attended. Business is still very much a contact sport and can only be accomplished by getting out there and meeting people so if you are not willing to change your life and schedule for that then why are you trying to be an entrepreneur? There are many office jobs that will suit you just fine.

These three habits can help start the process of what it takes to start thinking and acting like someone with a purpose, especially if they are trying to build a company. The sharks on the TV all come in with a purpose, which is to find the next great idea that will make them a lot of money. They got to where they are by getting up and working on their business everyday without any excuses. It’s not easy, and it is most certainly not fun majority of the time as this book made very clear about what being a CEO is really like, so the next time you make an excuse about something catch yourself and do away with it. The reality about excuses is this, you can only use them once or twice before people start to see right through them. This is because you should learn to fix the problem so it doesn’t happen the next time but when you use it again to get out of something you lose respect from people because the “action” you are speaking is that you have no control over your life so other people begin to think why should I share any new information with you when all you are doing to do is make more excuses to get out of it?

If you need more help understanding how to view excuses, which is the very reason why I have made it a point to never use them unless it actually happens, then this saying that my teacher in high school used to tell everyone that tried to get out of doing something works like gold, “Excuses are like armpits, everyone’s got them and they all stink.” Just remember that the next time someone tries to use an excuse on you for getting out of something.

These guys became Billionaires by taking other people’s ideas

Article updated: [9/10/2014]

Walk into any entrepreneur conference or brain storming session and you will hear ideas being shared all over. Try and talk to an entrepreneur about their secret idea they have been working on and they just might ask you to sign a Non-disclosure agreement (NDA). You might look at them and think, “why would I want to steal your idea when there are literally thousands being shared all over in this room but also on the internet?”

It takes an average person to put in the hard work to find the next best thing but it takes a certain genius to work smart to find the simplicity of doing business. A smart man might work day and night on his project in his basement trying to figure out all the problems and get it to work right but it takes a genius to pull together talent to do all the work for him. He might create a forum online asking people how they might solve a simple problem. He might write down everyone’s answers and then go back in to the same forum, while creating another forum elsewhere, and ask the question, “what would be the first step to building that thing,” and while people are responding to that question in the other forum he made, he could pose the question, “say someone needs help with <the very problem he posed in the first forum> and this thing that does this and that, what would be the tools he needs to build it?” This man simply took the work of other people and put it together in a way that worked without so much as typing on his keyboard.

That man working in his basement is the image we all have come to know as the American genius who worked out of his garage or basement and created the next great American company. He is remembered for his hard work and dedication but also for his genius of creating something no one else could think of. The second man is today’s business man who is looking to establish himself, not as a hard worker of business or even a genius of business, but as someone who knows how to clone and replicate on any scale. This man views business school as the connecting factor to people of importance but also as a way to focus their view on what everyone else is doing.

Samwer Brothers
If you were to ever meet someone who steals other people’s ideas for a living you might call them a thief but it’s not considered stealing if where you come from it doesn’t exist. All over the world there are people who look into what other countries are doing and then take that company’s idea and create it where they live. In their point of view, no sense in racking your brain over creating the next original business idea, when you can take what already works and build it for your country. You don’t need to know a lot about business to work as an entrepreneur in this fashion just need to know a lot about different companies and how they operate in order to clone and replicate.

Meet Marc, Oliver, and Alexander Samwer who are all about to become billionaires off the very idea of taking American  and Chinese companies and cloning them all over the world. If the idea is successful in America then why can’t it be successful in Germany or Indonesia, after they have made a few tweaks to them? As it turns out it can be a very successful operation for these brothers and that is exactly what they learned in business school. During their time in America studying in San Francisco they ventured out and explored what American companies were doing and studied them. They learned everything about what they were doing, and even wrote a book about it, so that they could then take that and build it back home or anywhere that needed it.

Theses area few of the companies they have cloned and made millions off of and soon to be billions off of.

American Company          Cloned Version
Zappos                               Zalando
Amazon.com                      Lazada
eBay                                   Alando
Facebook                           StudiVZ
Groupon                            CityDeal

Many of the cloned companies have since been absorbed into their American originator after finding out how successful they were in other countries. This helped the American company to expand their operations and then study the clone’s operations of how they matched cultural and consumer interests, which is not an easy thing to accomplish.

If you look at their company’s main website, Rocket Internet, you can see how they show all the companies they have cloned all over the world from companies inside China and the U.S. Their whole business model of entrepreneurship is not to create the next original thing but to take what already works, improve it to the customers you are working with, and sell to them. It’s very difficult to come up with an original idea and almost not worth the effort anymore when you can simply take what someone else has already done and make it your own and then build it.

After their company goes IPO each brother will probably take home close to a billion each or maybe a little more. The important thing to understand about how they did business was that they held majority voting power in their company in order to stay in control. When you study their company, they created a company that has specialized in the art of cloning businesses, something you don’t hear talked about very often. Instead if you were to ask a random entrepreneur what business they are working on, chances are you won’t hear them say, “I take companies that are already successful and clone them to work in other countries.”

What they did was a very smart move. They worked smart not hard, but they did put in the long hours and hard work to make it all happen but they didn’t spend wasted hours trying to come up with the next best thing.

Tips for Entrepreneurs reading this
1. Don’t look at this and say, “oh, well I will just google “companies in Australia” and find one to copy and I too will become rich.” If you read this article and think that is how easy it is, you are forgetting the hard work they put in first. Yes, these guys just copied business models and took them else where but you are forgetting that they studied these companies to understand every aspect of how they worked and why they worked.

2. Maybe you have an MBA and know a thing or two about business and would consider doing what they did. Great, go for it, but how will you raise the funds? The challenge to doing what they did was that they scaled their business clones very quickly to match the demand that was already there. If you think you can clone, let’s say, Amazon again in another country, well just how do you suppose you will be able to meet the demand that will come from it and not only that but how will you manage to survive financially, Remember, even though Amazon is the giant of internet shopping it still struggles to pull in a profit and for the first ten years it was in the red and just recently in the news it posted a negative earnings.

3. Start small and then slowly scale with an idea from another country to see how it works. Just because one restaurant in another country has a long line every night doesn’t the same thing in a country where people don’t even know what half the things on the menu are. Maybe you found how one company has fixed neighborhood crime by installing special lighting at community parks and waling areas to get people out more. It might be a good idea first to see what kind of people make up that neighborhood it works so well in and why.

4. If what you read sounds so easy that it has encouraged you to find an idea and clone it and you have never started a business before then you are setting yourself up for hardship in the end. In the many articles I have written the one thing I emphasis the most is putting in the hard work. What the brothers did was take another person’s idea and make it their own but selling that to investors was probably not an easy thing to do and all the setbacks and hardships they went through showed that they did not give up. Scaling an idea like Amazon on the internet is probably one of the greatest challenges of creating a business online. Read books like How to Get Rich and How to be Rich. They will wake you up to understand just what kind of work hours you will have to put in to get any business up and running, not to mention one that is profitable.

5. If you find a company overseas and you know for sure that it does not exist in your home country and you think you are onto something, do your homework and study that company like  you were in college. Learn how it manages its operations, how it hires people, how it markets and sells, the company culture, where it gets its financing from and anything else you can get your hands on. Read magazine interviews if there are any. If you find out that company is struggling, don’t get turned off by the idea but find out instead why; what could be causing that and if those same problems might occur in your own country.

6. Just because it worked well for one person doesn’t mean it will work the same for another. These guys are the cloners of businesses and that is something they have specialized in. They are the best at it and they have learned to turn it into a lucrative industry.

7. Ideas exist everywhere and it is evident by what people are doing with crowdfunding sites. No doubt someone is on those sites cloning some of the ideas they have found and producing them in their home city or state or even country. But take idea in stride and figure out all you need to know and out of respect, invest in their idea, if you plan on copying it.

Creating a Business doesn’t have to be hard, just requires Hard Work

Creating a business doesn’t have to be complicated. If you are worried about all the legal stuff that lawyers like to come up with to scare you and tax issues you have to deal with, why not leave it to the people who get paid to do that? Successful business ideas don’t start with all the legal stuff in the beginning, they all start with an idea. You then take that idea and see if anyone will buy what you are selling. If you find that people are willing to buy from you then you have a viable business on your hands.

Simple Steps to Starting a Business Today
Step 1.
Come up with an idea that you think people need or will solve a problem.

Josh Malone found a problem with water balloons. He saw that it took a long time to fill up water balloons and then tie them and then throw them. So he came up with a system that allowed you to fill up 37 water balloons in just a few seconds. Not only did they fill up but they also tied themselves so kids could start throwing them at each other right away. His kickstarter campaign showed that even though this is not a pressing issue, the time of the year to launch his product (summer in America) was the perfect timing for raising money. His initial goal was $10k but as of this writing, he has already reached $315,889 dollars. You can watch just what his program is all about in the video below.

Step 2. Build a Prototype or example to show people the purpose of your business

This is the hard part for most people. They have an idea but putting in the hard work to make it all happen is where you go from the dreamers to doers. Ask how many people around you have ideas for their business and you will get a lot of well-wishers who say, “someday I want to start my own business.” There are many people who have taken the first step in showing their hard work and it has paid off for them. People need to see that you are serious about your idea and if you show the first step then they will meet you part or half way.

Kleo’s Doughnuts is a good example of that

Xiki Commands created many videos to show their work in progress

Step 3. When asking for Money have a laid out plan to show what you plan to do with it.

A lot of people have trouble with this part because they have never had to manage money before in a way that goes towards building a business. This is why investors of any kind expect entrepreneurs to write a business plan so they know more about their business and what they will do with the money once it is given to them. The more detailed a business plan the more helpful it is to understand what you plan to do once you get funded. These are a few examples that demonstrate their effort.

Moment smartwatch is a wrist watch that allows you to type on the band and send information just like the screen on a smartphone. Their kickstarter campaign details what the product is about, their fund raising goals, and where they plan to go with it. All that detailed explanation paid off because they were able to go past their goal of $100k and hit $447,900.

Another campaign that passed its goal was to distribute money in random places to random people. The idea is connected to a series program that teaches about Art and Action and it’s relation to a variety of studies. His story and explanation for how he planned to use the money told investors the why and what and how they needed to know. He went past his goal of $1k hitting $1150 instead.

This guy came up with an idea for doing something he loves and sharing it with everyone else. If someone can raise money for a suit for an interview or bake a cake for their girlfriend then he figured he could mail people pancakes that he made. Not a silly idea since he was able to go past his fund raising goal.

Step 4. After you have received funds then you must show action
The prototype and examples you gave with your presentation are just the beginning parts of starting a business. Now the hard part begins with organizing everything, ordering supplies, and meeting deadlines. This is where idea becomes reality. It is one thing to create something for yourself but when other people depend on you to give them what they want that is when you have more responsibilities to deal with.

Justin Herd experienced his moment when he had trouble as a college student trying to eat his meals with out creating a lot of dishes in the process. He wanted something that he could use one time to do many things in. He created a bowl that you can cook in, strain, eat, and store food in. He idea took a long time to perfect and along the way he has been racking in the cash but his bigger moment came when he went passed his goal on kickstarter.

Step 5. Give the People what they want when they want it.
Now that you have laid out your plan, shown people what you can do and when they can get it, the next hard part is making sure they can get it anytime they want it. If barriers are up that make it difficult for them to get your product then it just encourages them to find competitors that sell similar products or services.

You never want to add more hassle to the shopping experience then there already is. You have to learn how to streamline your whole operation so that when orders come in they are met right away with action so they are sent out right away. Zappos company prides themselves on giving their customers little surprises when they order something from them. This could be in the form of replacing shoes without any problems or free next day delivery without them knowing about it.

You can also build on an idea and just improve it so that people already understand how to take advantage of it when they need it faster.

The free book lending library has become very popular with crowdfunding programs because it builds on an existing idea and just improves it a little bit.

Little Free Library in Brooks School Park
Little Free Library in Albany, NY
Little Free Library in Woolich, London

The great thing about the Little Free Library program is that they all met their goals.

After you have established yourself as a business that has customers and you have repeat business then you can move onto the legal stuff and tax stuff. You can hire out lawyers and accountants who can then manage your finances for your growing business. This way you can focus on the day-to-day operations and hiring new employees. This whole process has been shorten because of the ability to raise money faster online making it easier to start your business faster.

The most important thing to be aware of when starting any business is to know your strengths and weaknesses. If you have a hard time meeting deadlines then hire someone that can finish projects once you start them. After you have drawn out every part of your business so you can visually see how your business operates then you can start learning how to improve every part. It takes time but don’t expect to be up and running right away.

As for the dreamers of the business world the only expression you will hear from them when looking at successful crowdfunding campaigns is “that’s such a simple idea I could have come up with that.” Yea but you didn’t.

What you Say can Affect your Company’s Culture

People, in any setting, will naturally follow those that are in charge. This is very easy to see in group settings where you can easily tell who is in charge by where all eyes fall. If you look at a playground full of kids you can find that one kid who leads all the other kids into doing what they want to do. There is a natural tendency to these kinds of behavior, we follow people we believe who know what they are doing. But what about the things we tell ourselves? Do we follow them just as easily? Even more so because if we can not trust ourselves on what we say to ourselves then who can we trust?

The role of yourself over who you are is the same as a CEO over their company. The body is the company and the employees are the body parts of the head, which is the CEO; anytime a boss explains what it would like to do the rest of the body makes it happen. The same idea applies when people say something about how they feel the body follows through on that thought. How many times have you heard yourself say, “I’m so tired,” and then start to feel tired again. The same goes for those that say they are sick and then start to feel sick. Every time a negative thought comes out, whether it’s true or not, affects the performance of the body.

Creating a Healthy Company Culture
It’s common for the CEO of any company to always be the first one at any meeting and watch the rest of the staff slowly come in. A CEO that says, “I understand it’s hard to get here on some days so just do the best you can,” is playing along the lines of trying to be their friend but also trying to set some rules. The same thing is true when we try to tell ourselves, you did the best you can and that’s good enough so don’t beat yourself up over it.

We know that if we put the time and effort into something without making excuses then we can accomplish quite a bit of stuff that might even surprise us. A CEO who comes in and makes the following statement, “I understand getting to work can be hard on somedays but I do want to make one thing clear, everyone is to be on time at this weekly meeting which is part of your job so if you are not able to follow the responsibilities asked of you then you need to let me know right away so we can fix that otherwise I expect to see everyone here on time every week with no excuses.” This CEO has set the expectations of what he wants his staff to do. This is the same as someone telling their body that they will get up at 6 am to run and that is that. We all know CEO’s who run efficient companies because they come in prepared and ready to do work. But if you had the chance to ask any one of those CEO’s what they would like to be doing instead they would gladly tell you that they would rather be in bed sleeping, enjoying a nice long breakfast but instead they get up and move with the same energy that a productive person has in life.

So how do you start to change that lazy or tired attitude into something that will move your company forward? You have to start with yourself and listen to what it is you are saying to yourself to see what you are feeding the rest of your body and in this case, your company’s culture.

“I don’t have time right now”
This is a very popular phrase that people enjoy using, just for the sake of getting out of doing things when people ask them or they don’t want to make the effort of changing their schedule around. This is probably the most toxic of all phrase because these kinds of people get very little done in life which is surprising considering that they “don’t have time for anything.” So if they don’t have time for anything then what are they doing that is so much more important? Good luck trying to get the honest answer for that.

A CEO has lots on their plate for running a successful business. They need to make sure their product or service is running like it is supposed to, they need to check their cash-flow number, talk with new clients, investors, and attend meetings. CEO’s always have time for people who make their time worthwhile and if it is the case that their schedule is actually full, they will make the time if they see something with potential. The same goes for meetings, if a staff member brings up a new idea and the CEO says something like, “we don’t have time for that right now,” it gives the impression that he is not open to ideas, but a phrase like, “if you can send me an example of your idea, I’ll be sure to take a look at it later.” The second phrase encourages his staff to bring ideas to him but the first one creates an environment that this company is only for the CEO’s ideas. He has taken the idea of saying, “I don’t have time for that” and turned it into, “I have time for ideas that make sense.”

It’s important to catch yourself whenever you say this phrase and realize what opportunities you might be blocking out. You also need to be aware of how it affects people’s behavior around you.  No one likes being around someone who never has time for anything and so they slowly start, without even realizing it, phasing themselves out of social events that are important to know about. This is common for people with families who are always rushing to get home after work and not realizing all the important “after-work” meetings that are taking place or the networking events that are elevating other people’s careers. The trade-offs are hard to look at but these situations happen all the time so it’s important to create the impression that you always want to know what is going on around you but also to be honest with yourself about how busy you really are.

“It’s impossible, that will never work.”
If you have ever worked with people who look at everything in absolute terms then you know that they are very difficult to work with because they never want to try anything. They will look at the costs first and say it is too expensive so it can never be done then if you say not to worry about the cost they look for another fault, not enough materials to build it. Then when you finally show that everything is possible they will add in another excuse, who is going to do all the hard work. People like this should not really have jobs because they contribute nothing but pain and suffering because they just like to create more problems without creating any solutions in return. Their main purpose is to get out of doing more work.

This a common occurrence that many people impose on themselves when running into any challenge. A perfect example of this is when a friend offers to start a garden in their backyard but the friend listening starts listing all the problems with that idea, it will be hot outside, the dirt will need to be dug up, there are no supplies to till the soil, and they don’t have any seeds. A positive person would look at the project and say, my friend has gardening tools so I will call him and ask if I can borrow them and then we can pick up some seeds on the way and spend the afternoon seeing if the soil will be easy enough to work with.

A CEO who is receptive to ideas and encourages action lets people come to them all the time with how to do things better or suggest a product idea. Startups have this open door policy because they know that their employees are their best resource to get ideas from. A company that has been operating for awhile might start to have a plan in place that funnels ideas towards one person and if that person has a very “it’s impossible” mindset then majority of everything sent their way will be shot down. So just like yourself, don’t give yourself excuses just because you don’t want to try, give it a shot and see what happens. How you react to something shows people how you handle change.

It’s important to be aware of what comes out of your mouth. If you only have a stomach ache and you know you only have a stomach ache then don’t make yourself any worse by saying, “I’m really sick,” because your body will start to feel and act that way. Productive CEO’s don’t get sick that often and work longer hours but that is because they always carry with them a positive mindset in an environment that has risk all around. If you want employees to enjoy the place where they work talk more with them and using a positive style of talking. A CEO who ignores people who try to talk with them end up creating a company culture where ideas are not accepting. People will start to feel like they are not welcomed or appreciated. The same can be of yourself, if you want to stop being sick all the time then start getting out more and exercising even if you think something feels bad, just moving about helps get you going.
